A modern Japandi residence organized around light filtering through bamboo gardens.
Named after the poetic Japanese concept of komorebi—the interplay of sunlight filtering through leaves—this private Kyoto sanctuary merges ancient Sukiya-zukuri carpentry traditions with contemporary spatial transparency. Commissioned by a prominent contemporary ceramicist, the home accommodates a private exhibition gallery, tea ceremony pavilion, and tranquil domestic living quarters.
The residence wraps around an internal Japanese moss and black bamboo courtyard garden designed by renowned Kyoto landscape artisans. The building’s ground plane is unified through a continuous plinth of hand-flamed Kurama granite that extends from the exterior reflecting ponds directly through the floor-to-ceiling glass into the interior tea rooms.
Tectonic Joinery & Microclimate Ventilation
Rejecting synthetic adhesives and visible metal fasteners, the interior millwork features mortise-and-tenon joinery executed in sustainably harvested Japanese Hinoki Cypress and smoked chestnut. Operable cedar lattice screens modulate privacy and solar glare while capturing gentle cross-breezes flowing across the courtyard water garden, cooling interior spaces naturally during humid summer months.
